Think of Costa Rica, and chances are, one of the first scenes that comes to mind is a sun-soaked, sandy beach, with colorful toucans flitting across the sky and playful monkeys calling out from the jungle.
If this is how you imagine Costa Rica, well… you’re not wrong! It truly is paradise.
But if you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica, you’ve probably got practical questions about health and safety, too. We hear them all the time:
Can I drink the water?
Is the country safe?
What about mosquitoes and sun protection?
While there are certain considerations to keep in mind before traveling to Costa Rica, with the right precautions and preparations, you can easily enjoy the worry-free vacation of a lifetime.
Here’s what you need to know:
Let’s talk about water: Is it safe to drink?
Many travelers to Costa Rica are surprised to learn that tap water is generally safe to drink throughout most of the country!
We do suggest drinking filtered water if you’re traveling to more remote areas like the Osa Peninsula or Tortuguero. However, in developed areas of Costa Rica, you can typically fill your water bottle straight from the tap. When in doubt, ask your travel advisor, vacation rental, or hotel if the water in your area is safe to drink.
Buzz Off, Mosquitoes: Malaria, Dengue, and Zika
Malaria is not a major concern in Costa Rica. In 2023, an estimated 27 cases of Zika were reported. Dengue is the most prevalent mosquito-borne illness, and it’s the one you’ll want to be aware of.
We suggest packing a good mosquito repellent, especially if traveling during the Green Season or in locations with more mosquitos. (The coast and jungle have more mosquitoes than higher elevations.) Consider long sleeves and pants and a mosquito net if you’ll be out at dusk or sleeping in open-air locations.
Sun’s Out, Sunscreen’s On!
Costa Rica’s proximity to the equator means stronger solar rays. Whether you’re ziplining through canopies or just soaking up some beach vibes, a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is crucial. Reapply every two hours or more frequently if you’re taking a dip in one of Costa Rica’s many breathtaking beaches or waterfalls.
Sunscreen is expensive in Costa Rica, so we suggest packing reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the country’s waters.
Keeping Your Belongings Safe: Watch Out for Petty Crime
While Costa Rica is generally a safe destination, petty crime does occur, particularly theft. It’s wise to keep an eye on your belongings and never leave them unattended, especially on beaches or in cars. A little vigilance will go a long way in keeping your personal items secure.
Should You Be Nervous About Traveling to Costa Rica?
Absolutely not! With some preparation and these tips in your back pocket, you’re all set for a safe and healthy Costa Rican adventure. Remember, the key to enjoying your trip is preparation and prevention.
